Terms of Service — My Reading Room

Last updated: 20 May 2026

These terms ("Terms") govern your use of the My Reading Room iOS application ("the app", "the Service"). The app is provided by Meichun Li ("we", "us", "our"). By creating an account or using the app, you agree to these Terms.

If you do not agree, please stop using the app and delete it from your device.

1. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use My Reading Room. If you are under 18, you must have your parent or legal guardian's permission. The app is intended for personal, non-commercial use.

2. Your account

We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.

3. The free tier and the Companion subscription

Free tier — included at no charge:

Companion subscription — paid, optional:

The Companion subscription is offered through Apple's App Store at the prices shown in the app. Currently:

Prices may vary by region and may change. We will give you reasonable notice before any price increase. Existing subscriptions stay at their original price for the current billing period.

3.1 Free trial

3.2 Auto-renewal

Your subscription automatically renews at the end of each period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date. Renewals are charged through your Apple ID.

3.3 Cancellation

You can cancel anytime in iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current paid period; you keep access until then.

3.4 Refunds

Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple under their standard policies. We do not control refunds and cannot directly issue them. To request a refund, visit https://reportaproblem.apple.com.

3.5 Fair-use limit

The Companion subscription includes generous usage but is not strictly unlimited. To prevent abuse and keep the service sustainable, AI features have a soft cap of 200 calls per calendar month. This is well above typical use; ~95% of subscribers never approach it.

If you reach the limit, AI features pause until the start of the next month. Your library, notes, and existing AI responses remain fully accessible. If you have a legitimate need for higher limits, contact us — we will likely accommodate you.

4. Acceptable use

You agree to use the app and its AI features in good faith and only for personal reading reflection. You will not:

We may suspend or terminate access for violations, with or without notice.

5. Your content; our content

5.1 Your content

You own the books, notes, conversations, and reading lists you create in the app. Adding content does not transfer ownership to us. You grant us a limited, non-exclusive licence to store, process, and display your content solely so that we can run the app for you (including sending the relevant text to our AI provider to generate responses you have asked for).

5.2 AI-generated content

The AI features produce text in response to your prompts. As between you and us, you may use the AI's responses for personal, non-commercial purposes. AI-generated content is not authored by us and we make no claim to ownership.

The AI does not always produce accurate or appropriate output. AI-generated content:

5.3 Our content

The app's name, design, code, fonts, ornamental marks, and other materials we have created are owned by us or our licensors and are protected by copyright and trademark law. You may not copy or imitate them without permission.

6. Third-party services

The app uses third-party services to function (notably Apple, Supabase, and Anthropic). Their separate terms apply when their services are used. We are not responsible for the acts or omissions of third-party providers, and we may need to change providers without notice.

OpenLibrary and Google Books are used for book metadata lookup; we do not control their availability or accuracy.

7. Service availability

We aim to keep the app running smoothly but do not guarantee uninterrupted, error-free service. The app is provided "as is" and "as available". Maintenance, updates, network issues, or third-party outages may cause downtime. We do not promise that any specific feature will remain available indefinitely.

8. Disclaimers and limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law:

Some jurisdictions do not allow these limitations; in those places, our liability is limited to the maximum extent permitted by local law.

9. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from any claims, damages, or expenses arising out of (a) your violation of these Terms, (b) content you submit to the app, or (c) your misuse of the app.

10. Termination

You may stop using the app at any time. You may delete your account from within the app's settings (or by writing to support@myreadingroom.app), which will permanently remove your data within 30 days.

We may suspend or terminate your access at any time if you violate these Terms or applicable law, or if continued provision of the service becomes commercially impracticable. If we terminate without cause and you have an active paid subscription, we will refund the unused portion on a pro-rata basis.

11. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent change. For material changes, we will give you at least 30 days' notice via in-app message or email. Continued use of the app after the change takes effect means you accept the new Terms.

12. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Disputes will be resolved in the courts located in England and Wales, except that you may also bring claims in your country of residence where local consumer law gives you that right.
