Privacy Policy — My Reading Room
Last updated: 20 May 2026
This policy explains what information My Reading Room ("the app", "we", "us") collects, why we collect it, and how we handle it. The app is published by Meichun Li (referred to as "we"). If you have any questions, contact us at support@myreadingroom.app.
We aim for plain English. If anything below is unclear, write to us and we will explain.
1. Information we collect
We try to collect as little as possible, only what is needed to make the app work.
1.1 Information you give us when you sign in
- Email address. When you sign in with Apple, Apple sends us either your real email address or a private relay address (
@privaterelay.appleid.com). We use whichever you choose. If you sign in by email code, we use the email address you typed. - A unique user identifier. A random ID (UUID) generated by our authentication provider so we can keep your library separate from other people's libraries.
- (Optional) Your full name. Only if you choose to share it during Sign in with Apple. We do not require it and do not use it.
1.2 Information you create in the app
- Books you add to your library — title, author, cover image URL (where available), ISBN, published year, genre, the date you finished reading.
- Notes and reflections you write inside book sessions.
- Inspirations conversations — the messages you send and the AI's replies in the cross-library chat feature.
- Your subscription state — whether your Companion subscription is active, expired, or in a free trial. This is reported to us by Apple through StoreKit.
1.3 Usage information
- AI feature usage logs — for each AI request you make (e.g. "Generate Reading Companion"), we log which feature was used, the model, and the number of input/output tokens. This is used to enforce the 200-call monthly fair-use limit and to keep an eye on costs. We do not log the content of your messages in usage logs.
- Crash and performance data provided by Apple's standard App Store telemetry (only if you have agreed to share this with developers in your iOS Settings).
1.4 Information we do not collect
- We do not collect your location.
- We do not access your camera, photos, contacts, microphone, calendar, or health data.
- We do not use third-party advertising or analytics SDKs.
- We do not sell or rent your data to anyone.
2. How we use your information
- To run the app. Saving your library, your notes, your conversations, your subscription state.
- To provide the AI features. When you ask the AI Reading Companion to respond to your notes or to chat in Inspirations, we send the relevant text (your message, the book metadata, and recent conversation history) to our AI provider, Anthropic, to generate a reply.
- To enforce fair use. We count your AI calls within each calendar month to apply the 200-call soft limit included in your subscription.
- To provide customer support if you contact us.
We do not use your notes, conversations, or library to train AI models, advertise to you, or sell anything to third parties.
3. Service providers we share data with
To run the app we use the following service providers. They process your data on our behalf, and only as needed for the app to function.
3.1 Supabase (database, authentication, edge functions, file storage)
- What they receive: all data described above (account info, your library, notes, conversations, subscription state).
- Where stored: Supabase's secure cloud infrastructure.
- Purpose: the database that powers your account.
- Privacy policy: https://supabase.com/privacy
3.2 Anthropic (Claude AI)
- What they receive: the text of the prompts the app sends when you use AI features — typically the book's title and author, your written note or message, and recent conversation context. Plus an internal user ID (a Supabase UUID) so they can apply rate limits.
- What they do not receive: your name, email, or any contact info.
- Purpose: to generate AI responses to your notes and questions.
- Anthropic's policy on customer data: Anthropic does not use API inputs or outputs to train its models by default. See https://www.anthropic.com/legal/privacy
3.3 Apple
- What they receive: your sign-in (Sign in with Apple), subscription purchases (StoreKit), and any anonymous crash/usage data you have agreed to share with developers in iOS Settings.
- Purpose: authentication, payments, app distribution.
- Privacy policy: https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/
3.4 OpenLibrary and Google Books
When you search for a book to add to your library, the app queries OpenLibrary and Google Books to find matching titles, authors, ISBNs, and cover images. These services receive only the search terms you typed (e.g. "the great gatsby"); they do not receive your account information or any personal data.
4. Where your data is stored
Your data is stored in cloud infrastructure operated by Supabase (database and edge functions). Apple StoreKit data is held by Apple. Calls to Anthropic are routed through our secure backend, not directly from your device.
You should assume your data may be processed in any country in which our service providers operate.
5. How long we keep your data
We keep your data for as long as your account exists. If you delete your account (Settings → Delete account inside the app), your account and all associated data (books, notes, Inspirations conversations, AI usage logs) are deleted immediately and cannot be recovered.
6. Your rights
You have the right to:
- Access the data we hold about you.
- Correct data that is inaccurate.
- Delete your account and the data linked to it.
- Export your library, notes, and conversations in a machine-readable form.
- Withdraw consent at any time (which means closing your account).
You can exercise the export right yourself at any time — in the app, go to Settings → Your data → Export my data to download all your books, notes, AI responses, and Inspirations as a single JSON file.
To exercise any of the other rights, write to support@myreadingroom.app. We will respond within 30 days.
If you live in the European Union, the United Kingdom, or California, you have additional rights under the GDPR, UK GDPR, and CCPA respectively, including the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
7. AI-generated content
The AI features in the app produce content based on the book's title, author, and your notes. The AI is provided by Anthropic. AI-generated text:
- Is not professional advice (legal, medical, financial, or otherwise).
- May be inaccurate, biased, or out of date — please apply your own judgement.
- Is not authored by us; we make no warranty about its accuracy or fitness for any purpose.
8. Children
The app is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child has used the app and provided personal information, please contact us at support@myreadingroom.app and we will remove the data.
9. Security
We use industry-standard security measures, including:
- HTTPS/TLS for all data in transit.
- Authenticated access controlled by Apple Sign In and Supabase Auth.
- Row-level security in our database so users can only see their own data.
- API keys for our AI provider held only on the server, never on your device.
No system is perfectly secure. If we discover a breach affecting your data, we will notify you as required by law.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top will reflect the most recent change. If we make a material change, we will notify you in the app or by email at least 30 days before the change takes effect.
